Welcome to Year 1! Mrs Marshall is our teacher and Mrs Varley and Mrs Wood support us in class every day.
Life in Year 1 can get very busy - we are learning to be independent and are developing our skills across the curriculum but especially in reading, phonics, writing and maths. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum and we encourage the children to share books at home and at school. Please ensure that your child brings their reading record every day.
Our themes this year will be:
Autumn: Now and Then – how life has changed
Great Fire of London
Summer: Being human
This term we are looking at ways of caring for our planet. We will learn about some of the problems that our world faces and think about what actions we can take to help. We have a number of lovely books through which we can explore this theme, including ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’, ‘The Great Paper Caper’ and ‘Greta and the Giants’.
In our daily phonics sessions we will continue to focus on learning Phase 5 phonemes which will help us to develop our skills in both reading and writing.
In Maths we are working with numbers to 50 and beyond, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and finding measurements in length, weight, height and volume.
